Chapter 2:
Eiko pushed open the door and walked out into fall rain. Opening her black umbrella, she thought, Yep that is him, that is definitely him.
She signaled for a taxi and said, “Roppongi Street, please,” as she climbed in,
“Understood, Ma’am,” the taxi driver replied, pulling away from the curb of the street and driving away from that wretched cafe.
Stepping out of the taxi, Eiko thanked the driver, handing him 5000 yen. She walked towards the end of the street, and pushed open glass double doors that led to a tall, lit up building. Waking straight past reception and stepping into the elevator, she pressed number 8. The elevator hummed to life and shot up.
Eiko entered her office, shaking out her wet umbrella and taking off her black trench coat. She sat back in her chair, and kicked off her high heels. Time to get to work, she thought. Leaning forward, she opened the data table she had assembled of what she knew about that man, Yoshi Akamine, the information she had was: started working at Cafe Afterlife when he was twenty, but there were no records of him before that.
She slipped off the long, brown haired wig she had worn for this occasion, letting her short, silver white hair out of its tight bun. Running her hand through her hair, she rubbed her temples, trying to make her ever present headache disappear. Sighing, she pressed a button on the receiver and said, “Can Kanaye please come in?”
“Yes, I’ll call him up now,” said the secretary. About a minute later Kanaye walked in.
“Hello Agent Takahashi,” he said, pushing his brown bangs to the side.
“Kanaye, can you please pull up the reports on the missing persons in the past week?”
“Yes, in the past week, we have had… 15 more missing people.”
She sighed, “And they were all sinners?”
“Yes.”
“All of my witnesses saw them last in that cafe, Cafe Afterlife.”
“So, he is targeting sinners.”
“It appears so.”
She pulled up his picture on her laptop, blonde hair, blue eyes, and ear piercings. Kinda cute, Eiko thought, if he wasn’t a serial killer disguised as an innocent cafe barista. Pain shot through her skull, and she winced, holding her head. Kanaye’s eyes filled with concern and he reached for the advil he always carried in his bag. She waved him off and stood up, quickly pulling on her brown wig, and pulling on her high heels. She shoved her laptop and a notepad into her messenger bag and said “Let’s go.”
“Yes, Ma’am,” Kanaye answered quickly, taking her messenger bag from her and opening the door from her office.
They exited the building, quickly crossing the street to the small library that was just a few minutes away. It was Eiko’s special place, where her headaches always seemed to cease and the foggy mist in her head cleared. They sat down, and she sent Kanaye to get her some mint tea from the lounge area.
Yoshi Akamine was their primary suspect, but she needed to access the situation and get more evidence before she could actually take action. She knew who he was, but other than that he was just a newbie, at least, compared to her. You could tell by the way he had stared with wonder at the purple light above her head that he didn’t know the inner workings of the operation he was in.
“Agent Takahashi?” Kanaye had come back with the tea and had sat down in front of her. His green light showed brightly and always made her a bit happier, even in the darkest of times.
“Yes, I’m sorry, I must’ve zoned out,” she smiled and took a sip of her tea.
“Oh, it’s no problem,” he said with a chuckle.
“Okay, back to business. We need to dig up some information about this guy, who he is, where did he grow up, does he have any family, and anything else we can find.”
“Understood, I will do what I can to the best of my abilities,” Kanaye said.
“Alright then, let’s get to work,” Eiko said, focusing on the documents before her. She knew that Kanaye was one of the best, and had trained hard to work with her. She believed in him completely, but this was no simple case. After all, they were dealing with the devil.
